The instant asset write-off is one of the most searched tax topics in Australian small business. It is also one of the most misunderstood when it is paired with finance.
For eligible small businesses, the instant asset write-off lets you deduct the full cost of a qualifying depreciating asset in the year you first use it or install it ready for use – instead of depreciating it over several years. The threshold and eligibility rules are set by the ATO and can change, so always confirm the current year rules with your accountant before you buy.
Financing the asset does not automatically cancel the write-off. What matters is whether you hold the asset for tax purposes, when it is first used, and whether the asset and your business turnover sit inside the current rules. A chattel mortgage, where you own the asset from day one, is the structure most accountants look at first for this conversation.
30 June creates a rush every year. Lenders and dealers get busy. If the write-off is part of your plan, do not leave the finance application until the last week of June. Approvals, settlement and delivery all need to land so the asset is in use in the right financial year.
Do not buy an asset only for the write-off. The deduction is useful. The wrong truck or a machine you cannot repay is still a bad deal. Run the cash-flow first, then the tax outcome.
Treat this as education, not tax advice. Your accountant signs off the claim. Your broker’s job is to structure the finance so it matches that advice.
